Snacks for the ravenous
During the day tourists may eat with relish, however, the weather especially in summer months is not favourable to gorge oneself on local delicacies. Street sellers suggest above all fresh seasonal fruit, but also clearance fruit that are usually more expensive. Cypriots generally consume snacks in the form of pasties and raviolis filled with cheese and olives which can be sweet or salty. These pasties, as well as most of the Cypriot pies, are firstly made from flaky pastry and then baked. Fruit and almonds are other snacks that are also sold on the street in the form of long strings to which these almonds or fruit are attached and covered with various icing. The icing usually consists of rose water – a spice that is the most frequently added to sweets and snacks.
